Unifor will not cross Toronto Exhibition Place picket lines
TORONTO, July 31, 2018 /CNW/ - Unifor supports IATSE Local 58 staging, rigging and technical support workers who are locked out at the Toronto Exhibition Place.
"IATSE Local 58 members are trained to ensure the safety of those attending events at Toronto's Exhibition Place," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "Replacing highly-trained workers with under-skilled scab workers puts the safety of attendees at risk."
The Local 58 bargaining committee is negotiating with an employer that is determined to cut job security language and contract out work of the bargaining unit, says Unifor. Talks paused on July 20 when the employer stopped months of negotiations and locked out the IATSE members.
As a result, Unifor will cancel its contingent in the 2018 Toronto Caribbean Festival Grand Parade.
"The inaction the Board of Governors of Exhibition place has been unacceptable," said Christine Maclin, Unifor National Human Rights Director. "Workers of colour are now forced to either cross a picket line or miss out on an important cultural event."
"The Grand Parade is an opportunity for Toronto's Caribbean community to showcase Caribbean culture," said David Amow, Unifor Local 40 President and Unifor contingent volunteer. "The Unifor contingent will continue to support locked out IATSE Local 58 workers."
