Dionisio Gutierrez, President of Fundación Libertad y Desarrollo, weighs in on the current crisis in Nicaragua

GUATEMALA CITY, July 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In a strongly worded open letter published in the current edition of the regional periodical Estrategias y Negocios, Dionisio Gutierrez wrote to a public figure whom he referred to as "Commander", which seemed to be an obvious reference to Nicaragua's President Ortega, voicing the sentiment of a majority of Nicaraguan citizens?as well as many others around the world?and urged him to step down from his post.

He alluded to the manner in which Ortega came into power in the 1970's and condemned his tyranny and dictatorship that has cost the lives of hundreds of people in opposition in the past three months alone. The abuse of human rights, dishonesty, and corruption at the hands of the Nicaraguan leader were cited as just cause for Gutierrez's call for Ortega's resignation, which would bring an end to the suffering of millions and would bring freedom and true democracy at last to a country with a long history of political turmoil.

The letter mirrored some of the comments made at a recent forum held by Gutierrez's Fundacion Libertad y Desarollo, attended by political leaders such as former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush, former Prime Minister of Spain José María Aznar, former President of Bolivia Jorge Quiroga, and former President of Costa Rica José María Figueres. The conference, which focused on the importance of "authenticity and transparency" within the government and its citizens, reinforced the idea of strengthening democracy in Central America as a "civic responsibility."
