AFGE Endorses Michigan's Elissa Slotkin for Congress


WASHINGTON, July 17, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Elissa Slotkin for the U.S. House of Representatives for Michigan's 8th Congressional District.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the nation's largest federal employee union, has endorsed Elissa Slotkin for the U.S. House of Representatives for Michigan's 8th Congressional District.

"Elissa Slotkin has dedicated her life to national service and will work hard to protect the public-sector workers who keep our country going every day," AFGE District 7 National Vice President Dorothy James said.

"Elissa Slotkin's prior work as a senior manager in the Department of Defense allows her to know firsthand how arbitrary caps, mandated furloughs, and hiring freezes can make it difficult for federal offices to recruit and retain talent.

"In addition, Elissa opposes the administration's current efforts to weaken collective bargaining rights and prevent federal unions from representing employees at the job site. She believes that instead of privatizing the Department of Veterans Affairs and outsourcing its responsibilities, we should focus instead on building capacity within the VA so it can perform its critical and valuable mission of serving our veterans."

Nearly 53,000 federal employees live in Michigan ? supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time. There are nearly 13,000 current and retired federal workers in the 8th Congressional District.

AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 7 has nearly 20,000 dues-paying members in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
