Re-opening of a Fisheries and Oceans office in Kedgwick, New Brunswick

KEDGWICK, NB, July 16, 2018 /CNW/ - The Member of Parliament for Madawaska-Restigouche, René Arseneault, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced on Thursday the official re-opening of the Fisheries and Oceans office in Kedgwick, New Brunswick.

The re-opening of the Kedgwick office will enhance the local presence of fishery officers and improve their ability to monitor fishery resources along a network of more than 15,000 km of rivers and tributaries. The Restigouche and Kedgwick Rivers are primary salmon rivers within Northwestern New Brunswick.

Every year, recreational fisheries are active from early May until fall in this area. Recreational fishers, as well as tourists, enjoy fishing salmon, on a catch-and-release basis.

Kedgwick and surrounding communities benefit economically from the recreational fishing industry. The area is also important for Indigenous groups, which fish for food, social and ceremonial purposes. The presence of fishery officers in all areas will ensure sustainable recreational fisheries in this region for generations to come.
