THE ORIGINALIST, new play exploring late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, arrives in NYC on Saturday

NEW YORK, July 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Arena Stage's critically acclaimed production of John Strand's THE ORIGNALIST, which offers a peek inside the chamber of controversial Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, makes its NYC premiere at 59E59 Theaters beginning Saturday, July 14.

When a bright, liberal, Harvard Law School graduate embarks on a nerve-wracking clerkship with the conservative Justice, she discovers him to be both an infuriating sparring partner and an unexpected mentor. How will their relationship affect one of the most incendiary cases ever to reach the nation's highest court?

Four-time Helen Hayes Award winner Edward Gero (whose performance was called "unimpeachable at every turn" by the Washington Post) returns to his masterful performance as Scalia, when Washington. Tracy Ifeachor, a classically trained actor best known in the US for her roles in the CW hit shows Legends of Tomorrow and The Originals, joins THE ORIGINALIST as Cat, Justice Scalia's law clerk and sparring partner. Brett Mack (Asolo Rep, Chautauqua Theatre) rounds out the cast. Arena Stage's artistic director Molly Smith returns to helm.

This provocative play, which "avidly interrogates our political practices" (Washington Post), was judiciously researched by playwright John Strand, who interviewed several of Justice Scalia's "counter-clerks." Actor Edward Gero similarly did a deep dive into Justice Scalia, first watching Scalia argue in the Supreme Court session and, finally, spending considerable time with the Chief Justice both and in and out of chambers.

THE ORIGINALIST arrives in New York on the heels of Justice Kennedy's recently announced retirement, giving the production even more resonance.
