Emotional Support Animals Help College Students, Says FEBC

SAN RAMON, Calif., July 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Man's best friend has proven to be more than a pet that can fetch or roll over. Various experts agree that pets can increase happiness, decrease loneliness and reduce stress. They also have many other health-related benefits, including exercise and lowering blood pressure. Further investigation reveals Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) offer even more benefits to the people they assist, including college students living with debilitating disabilities, such as mental illness. If pet owners are looking for ways to keep costs down, Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC) may be able to help reduce vet expenses to help them keep their animals healthy. FEBC is a membership benefits company offering health and financial wellness benefits.

"Financial Education Benefits Center may help lower the costs associated with routine visits and emergencies for pets," said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. "While your pet can reduce your everyday stress levels, FEBC hopes to lessen your financial worries."

NYU pointed to different studies which reported exactly how stressed out students feel. For example, one study showed stress is the biggest reason students struggle academically. Additionally, more than half of all students across America said that their stress was triggered by school. Stress also has a very debilitating effect on students: 60 percent of students reported such high stress that they couldn't finish their school tasks. While all of these students may not qualify to have an Emotional Support Animal, they could reach out to a mental health professional to find out what their options are. If their stress qualifies them for an ESA at their dorms, they may soon enjoy the health benefits of their new, cuddly pet, such as reduced cortisol levels and improved mood.

In the last few years, colleges have seen an uptick of Emotional Support Animal requests for dorm living. This could be a result of an update to the Fair Housing Act in 2013, which now allows students with disabilities to bring their ESAs to their college dorms. "Anxiety and depression are the most common psychological conditions that we are seeing in student's request for ESAs," said Meredyth Goodwin, director of the Access Center at Washington State University. Students who are financially responsible for their ESA could look into the benefits program offered by FEBC. In addition to veterinary discounts, it also offers grocery and wellness benefits.

"If they have high costs associated with medication, students may get prescription savings, plus discounts on vision, dental and fitness," added Martinez. "The goal of FEBC is to help people, including college students, deal with the high cost of living by presenting alternatives. Our discount programs could be very helpful for them."
