SAN FRANCISCO, July 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The BRITE coalition, a growing group of over 1,000 organizations and individuals, is committed to working with county supervisors and other civic leaders to find common solutions to the growing wildfire challenges in California. Unfortunately, the 2018 fire season is off to the worst start in 10 years. This follows the 2017 wildfire season, which was the most damaging in the state's history. We can't defend the status quo.
This dangerous new normal in our weather requires us to find new approaches to help strengthen our energy grid and keep our communities safe. That is why the BRITE coalition strongly supports reforming the current system of inverse condemnation. We agree that energy companies should be held accountable when they are found to be negligent. However, California needs to make sure there is a fair and reasonable way to protect customers and maintain the ability of the utilities to continue investing in safety and upgrades to make our grid stronger and more resilient. We look forward to working with leaders across the state in these efforts.
