Media Advisory - Government of Canada to hold a technical briefing on Marine Mammal Regulations

OTTAWA, July 10, 2018 /CNW/ - Media are invited to call in to a technical briefing on amendments to Canada's Marine Mammal Regulations.

The new rules, which come into effect on July 11, will provide a suite of increased protections including a minimum approach distance of 100 metres for most whales, dolphins and porpoises to legally protect these animals from human disturbances, with variations in distance for certain species such as killer whales.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) officials will be available to answer questions on the amendments that include minimum approach distances for marine mammals including Canada's at-risk whales. The first portion of the briefing will be national in scope with the second portion focusing specifically on killer whale populations in B.C. and the Pacific Ocean.
