Free Support for Teachers from Renowned School Crisis Expert David J. Schonfeld in July 26 Webinar

BALTIMORE, July 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- With school violence, natural disasters, and other traumatic events making regular headlines, teachers preparing for the new school year need strategies for helping students through grief and loss. To serve their needs, Brookes Publishing will host a free, live webinar, "Supporting the Grieving Student," on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. EDT. The webinar will be presented by David J. Schonfeld, M.D., FAAP, a nationally renowned expert on childhood bereavement and school crisis and coauthor of The Grieving Student: A Teacher's Guide.

Dr. Schonfeld established and directs the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement, located at the Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work at the University of Southern California. For more than 30 years, he has provided consultation and training to schools on supporting students and staff in the aftermath of numerous crisis events, including school and community shootings in Parkland, FL, Newtown, CT, and Las Vegas, NV; flooding from Hurricanes Maria, Sandy, Katrina, and Ike; and the September 11th terrorist attacks.

The 60-minute webinar will give educators and other school professionals the essential information they need to provide sensitive, appropriate support to grieving students of all ages. Attendees will receive practical guidance on key topics such as initiating conversations with children and families after a loss, supporting students who are dealing with feelings of guilt, and conducting effective follow-up with grieving students. Dr. Schonfeld will also highlight resources at www.grievingstudents.org, a comprehensive website on bereavement, developed for education professionals by the Coalition to Support Grieving Students.

"When students struggle with grief and loss, teachers are often one of their primary sources of support," said Jeff Brookes, president of Brookes Publishing. "David Schonfeld is one of our nation's most respected experts on school crises, and this webinar will be an excellent opportunity for educators to build strong skills and strategies to help grieving students."
