Alzheimer's Family Center In Huntington Beach Receives Third Grant Award From SCAN

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- SCAN, a leading senior-focused organization with the mission of keeping seniors healthy and independent, today announced its third grant to the Alzheimer's Family Center (AFC), an independent nonprofit adult day health care provider dedicated to the daily care of individuals living with memory loss. SCAN's $15,000 contribution to AFC's Huntington Beach facility supports the provision of 840 hours of dementia-specific adult day care for 192 low-income, memory-impaired participants. SCAN has provided grant funding to AFC since 2013, helping to ensure individuals with Alzheimer's can continue to age in place and their family members can access support to better manage the challenges of caregiving.

"With over 84,000 known Alzheimer's cases in Orange County today, a number that's expected to climb to 250,000 within the next 30 years, what the Alzheimer's Family Center is doing to preserve the health, independence and quality of life for those with memory loss is critical," said Chris Wing, CEO at SCAN. "Through partnerships with and support for organizations whose ideals align with SCAN's mission, we're able to extend and enhance programs that enrich the lives of seniors and caregivers right here in Southern California."

Alzheimer's Family Center has a 38-year history of improving the quality of life of families challenged by Alzheimer's disease or another dementia through daily care that includes medical, rehabilitative, supportive, and evidence-based interventions and therapies. Family caregivers also receive much-needed rest while their loved one is cared for in a safe and supportive environment, as well as intensive case management support from an assigned social worker and nurse who work as "partners in caring" to troubleshoot issues in care.

In addition to its adult day care services, AFC offers no-cost memory screenings to help identify possible memory loss and changes in cognition. The screenings are designed to raise awareness on the importance of detecting memory loss early on and address the lack of access to screenings.

"Many families who've been affected by memory loss become overwhelmed with this immense undertaking and don't know where to turn," said Joanna Richardson-Jones, executive director, Alzheimer's Family Center. "We are here to be their guidance and support, and have been on the front lines of providing this person-centered dementia care across Orange County for 38 years. SCAN's continued support allows us to keep delivering on that promise."

In keeping with its non-profit mission, SCAN provides direct funding to help bridge the gap between community needs and available resources for seniors. Non-profits located in SCAN's California service areas are eligible to apply for SCAN community grants. Applications may be submitted year-round and grants are made quarterly.
