Pacific Mall welcomes enforcement by York Regional Police
TORONTO, June 27, 2018 /CNW/ - Yesterday, seven units in Pacific Mall were served search warrants by York Regional Police. We believe that the units are alleged to have been in possession of, or trading in, imitation goods. Compliance with the laws and regulations that govern the sale of goods is taken very seriously by Pacific Mall management and the overwhelming majority of the 731 unit holders operating in the mall. The units affected by search warrants today represent less than 1% of the units in the Mall.
Since this past February, Pacific Mall has undertaken an internal compliance and information program including:
- Issuing written advisories and warnings to all vendors on exchanging or selling imitation goods, and the legal consequences for engaging in such practices
- Partnering with manufacturers to assist in identifying imitation products
- Commissioning a private investigation agency to conduct regular internal audits and monitor for imitation goods
- Issuing a Code of Conduct that imposes compliance with various legal and ethical standards relating to the sale of goods to all units
- Launching a public awareness campaign and website www.reportimitationgoods.com to increase consumer knowledge on how to identify imitation items, and steps customers can take to protect themselves from buying imitation goods
- Meeting with the York Regional Police to share information
- Passing an amendment to the condo corporation's bylaws, that came into effect May 14th of this year, in keeping with the Ontario Condominium Act specifically banning the trade of imitation goods at Pacific Mall
As we monitor this situation closely, we will continue to adopt various practices that will help discourage such behaviour from recurring in the future. We are grateful for the assistance of the York Regional Police as we endeavor to maintain the public's confidence in Pacific Mall as a venue where consumers and families can find a wide array of quality products at great value.
