Language rights: Commissioner Théberge appeals decision in FFCB case
GATINEAU, QC, June 21, 2018 /CNW/ - Raymond Théberge, the Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada, is appealing today the decision handed down by the Federal Court on May 23, 2018, in the case of the Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique (FFCB) versus Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and the Employment Insurance Commission.
"I initially intervened before the Federal Court because of the importance of the issues raised. Given the decision, I want to appeal in order to prevent a decline in the rights ensured by the Official Languages Act," stated Mr. Théberge.
In its decision, the Federal Court interpreted that Part VII of the Act, which states that the government must support the development and vitality of Canada's official language minority communities, does not require federal institutions to take specific and positive measures.
"I want to remind Canadians of the importance of continuing to file complaints when federal institutions appear to be violating the Official Languages Act. The Office of the Commissioner's investigations can lead to lasting changes and assert the rights of communities all the way to the courts from time to time," added the Commissioner.
