Traffic Enforcement in Gatineau Park
OTTAWA, June 19, 2018 /CNW/ - Over the weekend, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, in partnership with the National Capital Commission, conducted a road safety blitz in Gatineau Park. Seven Provincial Offence notices were issued for speeding and one for a stop violation. A written warning was also issued.
It was the second road safety blitz in the Park this year, an initiative taken to ensure public safety. The first took place on June 10 and resulted in 70 vehicles intercepted, 6 speeding tickets issued and one warning for impaired driving.
"Road safety is a shared responsibility. Everyone should respect speed limits, share the road and remain vigilant at all times." said RCMP Staff Sergeant Chris Fraser, Non-commissioned officer in charge of Special Operations General Duty Protective Policing. "In close collaboration with our partners, we're working to make Gatineau Park safe for everyone by ensuring that drivers respect the law."
The RCMP, NCC, Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau and the MRC des Collines, are all working together to increase the police presence and improve public safety in Gatineau Park. The RCMP patrols the roads frequently, including at night, and implements targeted and strategic roadside enforcement programs.
Gatineau Park's parkways and access roads are sometimes closed to motor vehicles for competitions and special activities such as bicycle Sundays. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings, they are reserved for cyclists, roller-bladers and roller-skiiers.
"Driving cautiously and respectfully is the first condition to ensure everyone's enjoyment. Everyone who drives in Gatineau Park should respect the law and share the road with pedestrians and cyclists. Also remember that animals often venture out of the forest and can cross the road at any moment," explains Mme. Christie Spence, Director of Québec Urban Lands and Gatineau Park.
In Gatineau Park, the RCMP and the NCC would like to remind visitors that:
- the speed limit is 60 km/h
- drivers must exercise caution when overtaking cyclists, maintaining a distance of 1.5 meters
- cyclists must ride in a row when they are in a group
- alcohol is prohibited at any time and in any place other than your campsite
Road safety is everyone's responsibility.
