The Route to Successful Opioid Tapering Explored at PAINWeek Workshop

MONTCLAIR, N.J., June 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- At PAINWeek 2018, the program agenda will be augmented with 4 registration-only, limited attendance workshops designed to provide an in-depth examination of critical topics in pain management. The half- and full-day workshops will be led by senior PAINWeek faculty teams, and require a supplemental conference registration fee.

On Tuesday afternoon, September 4, Patient-Centered Opioid Reduction will introduce critical behavioral and medical aspects of an evidence-based patient centered approach to voluntary opioid reduction, including transforming the messaging in the clinic environment, using the right approach and language, partnering with patients, setting them up for success with a tapering schedule, and helping patients feel and be in control. Both provider-level and clinic-level strategies will be discussed. This interactive workshop will be led by Beth Darnall, PhD, Ming-Chih Kao, PhD, MD, and Richard Stieg, MD, MpH, whose research on this topic was recently published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Based on their successful preliminary studies, they received national funding to implement a patient-centered voluntary opioid reduction in primary care and pain clinics in 4 states. Attend this workshop if you are looking to help patients on moderate and high-dose opioids successfully reduce their doses with minimal or no additional resources.

Commenting on results from the program, Dr. Darnall, a clinical professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine at Stanford Medicine, said "Our pilot data suggest that many patients are open to a tapering pathway if it is presented to them compassionately and in a patient-centered way. Our results show that tapering methods matter greatly, and that we may help the many outpatients who wish to reduce their opioids do so successfully without increased pain. We look forward to sharing insights from our work on this critical and challenging issue for patients with chronic pain and those who provide their care."

Registration fee for this workshop will be $165.00. To maximize the workshop experience, participation will be limited and early registration is encouraged. Please click here to register and learn more.
