READOUT: Minister McKenna discussed ambition for climate action with British climate leaders

LONDON, June 18, 2018 /CNW/ - Canada's Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, was in London to meet with leaders from the United Kingdom to advance action on shared environmental priorities, such as phasing out coal; reducing plastic pollution; and advancing ambitious climate action to protect our environment, grow our economy, and create jobs.

Earlier today, Minister McKenna met with the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Michael Gove, and the Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, Claire Perry.

During the meeting with Secretary Gove, they exchanged on key issues to advance during the upcoming meeting of G7 ministers of environment, energy, and oceans, such as climate change and sustainable finance, with a focus on marine plastic pollution. Both Minister McKenna and Secretary Gove highlighted the importance of businesses in the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy.

With Minister Perry, Minister McKenna discussed joint climate and environment initiatives that are advancing our commitments to the Paris Agreement, such as the Powering Past Coal Alliance, the Mission Innovation partnership, and the Canada-United Kingdom partnership on clean growth and climate change.

The United Kingdom is one of Canada's most important international partners, and we will continue to collaborate on ambitious and effective solutions to protect our shared environment, fight climate change, and promote opportunities for clean economic growth.
