Unit 2 Contract Instructors Ratify Collective Agreement with York University
TORONTO, July 15, 2018 /CNW/ - Contract instructors at York University, members of CUPE 3903 Unit 2, have voted to ratify an agreement with York University, ending the strike for over 1,000 course directors as well as some teaching assistants and instructors who are not full-time graduate students.
Units 1, 2 and 3 of CUPE 3903, representing teaching assistants, contract faculty and graduate assistants, began strike action on March 5 in an effort to secure a fair contract that, among other things, addresses the issue of precarious employment, which is endemic in Ontario's post-secondary education sector. Each unit of CUPE 3903 negotiates their own collective agreement and votes independently of the other units on ratifying contracts.
CUPE 3903 units 1 and 3 have not ratified an agreement and will remain on the picket line of the now 15-week strike.
"Units 1 and 3 have been on strike for fifteen weeks because we cannot accept precarious work and the decline of academic integrity at York, and in all Ontario Universities," said CUPE 3903 Chairperson Devin Lefebvre. "We will continue to work toward a fair contract."
