The Canadian Race Relations Foundation Invites You to Celebrate Our Diverse Shared Heritage During Celebrate Canada 2018
TORONTO, June 14, 2018 /CNW/ - The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is delighted to participate in Celebrate Canada 2018 and invites all Canadians to join in events that celebrate our diverse shared heritage.
Celebrate Canada consists of a series of days designated by the Government of Canada to reflect upon our identity as Canadians and to learn from the various communities that make up Canada. These Celebrate Canada days are National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), St. Jean Baptiste Day (June 24), Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27), and Canada Day (July 1).
"These days are opportunities to celebrate the cultural diversity of all Canadians," said Albert Lo, Chair of the Board, CRRF. "Appreciating and understanding the contributions of Canada's diverse communities is an important first step in building a society where mutual respect for our human dignity prevails."
In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), the CRRF will be hosting a webinar titled "Reconciliation: Beyond Canada 150," featuring Maurice Switzer, Bnesi, a citizen of the Mississaugas of Alderville First Nation and an Adjunct Professor with the University of Sudbury's Indigenous Studies Faculty. The webinar will be broadcasted online nationally on June 21 from 10-11:30 am. Registration is free and open to all members of the public via this link.
The CRRF will mark Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27) with an event and reception in Toronto.
"This is truly a special occasion," said Dr. Lilian Ma, CRRF Executive Director. "Not only will we celebrate Multiculturalism Day, we will also commemorate the upcoming 30th anniversaries of the passing of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act (assented to July 21, 1988) and the Japanese-Canadian Redress Agreement (September 22, 1988), the latter of which created the Canadian Race Relations Foundation."
The CRRF's Multiculturalism Day event is in partnership with the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers and other sponsors. It will be held at the Ontario Bar Association from 5-7 pm on June 27. In addition, the CRRF invites all Canadians working to foster positive race relations in Canada to participate in its celebration of multiculturalism by submitting projects for consideration for its Best Practices / Awards of Excellence program. These recognize public, private, or voluntary organizations whose efforts represent excellence and innovation in combating racism in Canada. The deadline to submit is June 30. Submissions may be sent online through the following link. Winners will be announced at the Awards of Excellence Gala at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 27, 2018.
