Better wastewater treatment for Watson Lake residents
WATSON LAKE, YT, June 14, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Yukon are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Northern Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water and wastewater services that meet their unique needs.
The Honourable Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable John Streicker, Yukon Minister of Community Services, today announced funding for upgrades to the Watson Lake lagoon under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF). The federal government is providing $1,750,500?up to 75 per cent of funding for this project?and the territorial government is providing over $583,500.
Thanks to this investment, residents of Watson Lake will benefit from an improved, modern, and reliable sewage lagoon to enhance the capacity of the Town's wastewater treatment system. These upgrades are essential to keeping our waterways clean and our communities healthy and livable.
This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Yukon for the CWWF.

- The Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
- $26.9 billion of this funding will support green infrastructure projects, including $5 billion that will be available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
- $2 billion of this funding will support infrastructure projects that meet the unique needs of rural and northern communities like facilities to support food security, local access roads and enhanced broadband connectivity. In addition, $400 million will be delivered through the Arctic Energy Fund to advance energy security in the territories.
- $4 billion of this funding will support infrastructure projects in Indigenous communities.
