New funding supports clean and cost-effective water treatment for residents of Selkirk

SELKIRK, MB, June 14, 2018 /CNW/ - Investing in green infrastructure helps Canada reduce its carbon footprint, create a clean-growth economy and increase our resilience against climate change. It also helps communities safeguard public health and protect their local environment.

The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and Vicki-May Hamm, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, today announced a $750,000 grant and $5 million loan through the Green Municipal Fund for a new wastewater treatment plant in Selkirk.

The new plant will use an innovative biological treatment process that will significantly reduce the level of pollutants in water returned to the Red River and Lake Winnipeg. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 159 tonnes annually, improving air quality over the long term.

This work is being undertaken to replace Selkirk's aging wastewater infrastructure and support its climate change and sustainability action plans. It will bring the City into compliance with provincial wastewater treatment regulations and make municipal asset management more efficient and economic.
