Government of Canada supports Ontario innovators through Build in Canada Innovation Program

Driving Canadian innovations from the lab to the marketplace

BURLINGTON, ON, June 8, 2018 /CNW/ - Through the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP), the Government of Canada is connecting Canadian innovators with their vital first customer and helping generate sustainable economic growth in communities across the country.

Today, Pam Damoff, Member of Parliament for Oakville North?Burlington, announced that the Government of Canada is investing in a made-in-Canada innovation. Morgan Advanced Materials, Composites and Defence Systems of Burlington, Ontario, received a $404,828 contract for its protection tool (Light Weight Armour 324+ ic06), ideal for military and security personnel.

The innovation is an ultra-lightweight rifle plate used in body armour worn by military and security personnel. The rifle plate in the armour shatters bullets upon impact and absorbs the momentum of shots. The innovation will be tested by Defence Research and Development Canada.

Through the Build in Canada Innovation Program, Public Services and Procurement Canada bridges federal departments who have an operational need with innovative businesses who can fill the gap. Purchasing departments test the innovations in real-life settings and provide feedback, as well as a critical first reference. Since 2010, BCIP contract awards have helped create 1,684 full-time jobs across the country, generating significant economic impact. This is just one of the many ways the Government of Canada supports innovators, including small and medium-sized businesses, across Canada.

We can be proud that companies with cutting-edge technologies are leveraging the Build in Canada Innovation Program to create economic opportunities and quality jobs for those here in Ontario."

"We highly value the impact that the Build in Canada Innovation Program has on Canadian innovation and manufacturing, and are extremely proud to have won these two contracts from the Government of Canada, one in 2017 and one this year. This program, which is invaluable to companies, is effective at providing funding and end-user testing for pre-commercial goods, ultimately accelerating pre-commercial innovations into commercially sellable products. Winning these BCIP contracts is a testament to Morgan's innovative and lifesaving products and our aim to ensure the safety of those who protect us on a daily basis."
