Government of Canada and Halifax Regional Municipality invest in public transit infrastructure to improve passenger experience

DARTMOUTH, NS, June 8, 2018 /CNW/ - Investing in public infrastructure supports efficient, affordable and sustainable transportation services that help Canadians and their families get to work, school and essential services on time and back home safely at the end of a long day.

Darren Fisher, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth?Cole Harbour, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Sam Austin, Councillor for Dartmouth Centre, for the Halifax Regional Municipality, and Brendan Maguire, Member of Legislative Assembly for Halifax Atlantic, today announced up to $5.6 million in joint federal-municipal funding for projects to improve Halifax Transit infrastructure and service.

The federal government is providing over $2.1 million through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund. The Halifax Regional Municipality will provide the remainder of funding.

Projects include improvements to the Halifax and Alderney Landing Ferry Terminal pontoons and the purchase of eight conventional buses. Pontoon improvements include replacing fenders, maintaining weather-tight seals and repainting key areas, ensuring the continued function and safety of pontoons and allowing passengers to transfer between the ferry and terminal safely. The addition of new buses ensures that the Halifax Transit bus fleet remains in a state of good repair and meets ridership needs.

Both projects will improve Halifax Transit passenger experience and increase operational efficiency for a more sustainable transit system.
