Improving mental health reduces chronic homelessness: The end of a vicious circle in the west of Montreal
MONTREAL, June 06, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new partnership between CIUSSS West-Central Montreal and the Welcome Hall Mission puts an end to chronic homelessness among men by offering community mental health services in this shelter located in the western part of Montreal.
Men experiencing chronic homelessness combined with mental health issues can now benefit from the Program to Re-integrate homeless Individuals Seeking Mental Health (PRISM) that enables them to reintegrate into the community after a few months of care and support.

"Men who use the Welcome Hall Mission can now receive local care from mental health experts. We now go to them, not the reverse", says Dr. Vincent Laliberté, psychiatrist at CIUSSS West-Central Montreal and head of the program. "PRISM offers them personalized guidance as well as the tools they need to reintegrate living in an apartment and ultimately regain a quality of life in just a few months."
PRISM was initiated by CIUSSS West-Central Montreal in close collaboration with the Welcome Hall Mission, who provides shelter to users.
"PRISM not only provides a more effective way to fight chronic homelessness but improves management of financial resources by leveraging the existing local expertise," said Samuel Watts, Executive Director/CEO of the Welcome Hall Mission.
Welcome Hall Mission, now the fourth site on the Island of Montreal offering PRISM, gives access to more effective local care to the men it shelters.
