Statement by Minister Joly on Portuguese Heritage Month

Portuguese Heritage Month begins today

OTTAWA, June 1, 2018 /CNW/ - On November 8, 2017, the House of Commons of Canada officially designated June as Portuguese Heritage Month.

Canada is proud to be home to over 480,000 Canadians of Portuguese descent?one of the largest Portuguese diasporas in the world. Canadians of Portuguese descent have influenced the social, economic, political and cultural life of our country. Portuguese Heritage Month is a fitting occasion to recognize their immense contribution to the growth and prosperity of this country. As this year is the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, the designation of this month reaffirms our government's commitment to diversity, one of Canada's greatest strengths.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I invite all Canadians to celebrate the richness of Portuguese culture and heritage. I want to thank the Portuguese community for helping to make Canada the welcoming, inclusive and prosperous country that we know today.
