Statement by the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour in response to the 2018 Spring Report of the Auditor General of Canada

OTTAWA, May 29, 2018 /CNW/ - Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, issued the following statement:

"Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) is committed to a renewed partnership with Indigenous organizations and to strengthening and supporting the skills and training programs Indigenous people need to fully participate in the economy and improve their communities.

The recommendations from the Auditor General's spring report are timely as we transform our labour market programs for Indigenous people, such as the new Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) Program. Officials in my department continue to work together with Indigenous partners to bring forward meaningful changes to skills training programs for Indigenous people.

This approach reflects our government's ongoing commitment to a renewed relationship with Indigenous people, one that is framed by principles of reconciliation, including recognition of rights, respect, co-operation and partnership.

Until 2016, the then-called Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS) had not received an increase in funding in 17 years. Our government is committed to getting this right. That's why ESDC is working with Indigenous partners to co-develop and implement the new ISET Program with the Budget 2018 investment of $2 billion over five years and over $400 million per year ongoing.

The ISET Program includes increased funding, longer-term agreements, and enhanced performance measurement and takes a distinctions-based approach to better meet the needs of First Nations, Inuit, Métis and urban/non-affiliated Indigenous people. These improvements come following extensive engagement throughout 2016 with Indigenous leadership and Indigenous service delivery organizations.

We will continue to work in collaboration with Indigenous organizations to collect, monitor and analyze relevant information and data so that the new Program helps to ensure better outcomes for Indigenous people for generations to come."
