Quebec ENERGY STAR® Canada Partners Recognized for Leadership in Energy Efficiency

OTTAWA, May 29, 2018 /CNW/ - Energy efficiency can save Canadians money, help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a clean economy that includes good, middle-class jobs.

With the value of the energy efficiency market expected to grow to $550 billion by the year 2035, Canada has the opportunity to promote energy efficiency and deliver economic growth through investments in innovation. Through the voluntary leadership of businesses and organizations, we can see the transition to a low-carbon economy in action.

Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, today recognized the national winners of the 2018 ENERGY STAR® Canada Participant Awards, and the first certified ENERGY STAR commercial and institutional buildings in the country, for helping Canada build a clean energy future and address global climate change. Among the award winners are one organization and eight buildings in Quebec.

The ENERGY STAR Canada Participant Awards ? now in their 15th year ? recognize organizations that have demonstrated excellence in promoting the most energy-efficient products and new homes available on the market in Canada. They represent utilities, manufacturers, retailers, associations and homebuilders that are helping Canadian consumers and businesses save money while also addressing climate change.

In March, the ENERGY STAR Canada program expanded to include the certification of seven types of commercial and institutional buildings, which encourages and recognizes top energy performance in commercial offices, K-12 schools, hospitals, medical offices, senior care communities and residential care facilities, supermarkets and food stores, and ice and curling rinks. The "Who will be the first?" challenge distinguishes buildings that are amongst the first certified buildings in Canada.

The Minister also announced that automotive and commercial baking sectors now have access to Energy Performance Indicator (EPI) benchmarking tools. The ENERGY STAR for Industry certification, launched In August 2017, is designed to help Canadian manufacturers reduce energy costs and remain competitive.

Quote

"Investing in our homes and buildings is one of the easiest ways to combat climate change. On behalf of all Canadians, I am proud to recognize these Quebec-based businesses for their superior energy performance and ongoing leadership in improving energy efficiency in Canada."
