Publication of the 2018-2021 Action Plan under the Canada-Colombia Agreement on Labour Cooperation

OTTAWA, May 23, 2018 /CNW/ - In line with Canada's progressive trade agenda and in the context of Canada's labour agreements, the Government of Canada is committed to improving working conditions in Canada and in partner countries alike, and promoting respect for internationally recognized labour rights and principles.

Following the release in January 2017, of the Canadian National Administrative Office's report in response to a complaint submitted by the Canadian Labour Congress and five Colombian labour organizations alleging that the Government of Colombia failed to comply with its obligations under the Agreement on Labour Cooperation between Canada and Colombia, the Office made a number of recommendations, including that Canada and Colombia engage in ministerial consultations to develop a multi-year action plan to address these recommendations.

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, and the Minister of Labour of Colombia, Griselda Janeth Restrepo, marked the conclusion of the ministerial consultations and provided labour officials from both countries with the mandate to implement the actions and measures agreed upon in the Action Plan.

The Action Plan is the result of a constructive and open dialogue, and provides Canada and Colombia with a structured compliance framework as the implementation and co-operation under the Action Plan unfolds. Canada is committed to working collaboratively with Colombia throughout the implementation of the Action Plan with a view to ensuring that worker rights, notably the rights to associate freely and bargain collectively, are protected.

Quote

The multi-year Action Plan signed under the Canada?Colombia Agreement on Labour Cooperation reflects the spirit of collaboration that has characterized the relationship between our two countries, and our shared commitment to protecting workers' rights. Canada looks forward to the effective and sound implementation of the Action Plan".
-The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour
