Doctors request budget to do Cochlear Implant Surgery

MONTREAL, May 23, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - People who are deaf or profoundly deaf can get the gift of being able to hear with cochlear implant (CI) surgery. This miraculous, life changing, surgery is now routine and available in virtually every major city in North America and Europe but not in Montreal. In Quebec the surgery is only done in Quebec City. This means that the approximately 70% of Quebecers who live in or around Montreal face significant hardships in getting the surgery. Some are not getting the surgery because of family obligations, financial pressures and/or job requirements which prevent them from travelling to Quebec City for the testing, assessments, surgery and adjustments to the speech processor, all of which add up to three or four separate trips totalling over two weeks away from family. For those who go, they must incur extra costs and emotional stress. This is wrong and cruel. It is even worse when one considers that those suffering already have to cope with a severe handicap.

Our group of doctors, audiologists, patient representatives and politicians are asking that 70% of the budget for CI surgery and related activities be transferred to Montreal immediately so the surgery can be done in both Quebec City and Montreal. We are not asking for one additional cent and doing this will save the government money since assessment and counselling services that are currently duplicated in both cities will no longer need to be repeated. All the people needed for a CI program are fully trained and ready to go. All that is missing is the permission of Minister Barrette and a transfer of the budget. Our appeal to the minister was made directly to him in a meeting on this subject about 8 months ago and we are still waiting for an answer. Premier Couillard, at a meeting a few weeks ago, stated that he would speak to the Minister and that we would get a response soon.

Benefits of having the CI program in both cities include:

For 14 years our group has been advocating for this. The time for study and reflection is long past. We are asking for immediate permission and a transfer of the budget so a CI program in Montreal can be up and running in a few months and before the October election.
