Ayanle Hassan Ali not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder
TORONTO, May 14, 2018 /CNW/ - Today in Ontario Superior Court, Ayanle Hassan Ali was found not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder as defined by s. 672.1(1) of the Criminal Code for offences stemming from a knife attack at the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre in Toronto on March 14, 2016.
Following the incident, he was charged with three counts of attempted murder contrary to s. 239(1)(b) of the Criminal Code, two counts of assault causing bodily harm contrary to s. 267(b), three counts of assault with a weapon contrary to s. 267(a), and one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to s. 88, all in association with a terrorist group contrary to s. 83.2 of the Code. He was acquitted of the terrorism charges and found not criminally responsible of the lesser included offences.
After considering the evidence and the expert reports, PPSC concluded that a judge or a jury would find Mr. Ali to be not criminally responsible, and that society would be best protected if he was detained and received psychiatric treatment.
Since March 2016, Mr. Ali has been in custody at a secure treatment facility where he will remain under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Review Board.
