Update on the Berti Marques Case
MONTREAL, May 11, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - It was through the media that the National Circus School learned that one of its teachers had been arrested on Thursday, May 10, and charged with criminal acts of a sexual nature allegedly perpetrated against a former student.
The entire School community is profoundly shocked and upset by this news, and our thoughts are with our former student. Front-line services have been deployed to provide support to students and staff at the School.
Given the gravity of the charges, Mr. Marcelo Berti Marques, who joined the School in August 2016, was immediately suspended from his position and will remain so until further notice. The National Circus School systematically conducts criminal background checks on all teaching staff. The School offers its full cooperation to the City of Montreal's police department.
The School has in place a Code of Conduct that aims to provide students with a safe, positive and respectful educational environment. Ever mindful that they are at the heart of the teaching mission, the School remains available to its students at all times and is ready to answer any questions they or their parents may have.
To preserve the anonymity of the alleged victim, who is a minor, and to avoid infringing the ongoing judicial process, the School will make no further comment.
