Two Ontario youth selected to participate in the RCMP Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program

NEWMARKET, ON, May 11, 2018 /CNW/ - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) Recruiting Unit in Ontario is pleased to announce that two applicants have been selected to participate in the Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program (APTP) at the RCMP Academy ("Depot" Division) in Regina, Saskatchewan. The successful candidates are Trey Bardy from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory of the Bay of Quinte and William Basawa from the Whitefish River First Nation.

The RCMP's Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program (APTP) offers Canadian Indigenous people aged 19 to 29 years old the opportunity to get an inside look at the life of an RCMP police officer. This summer program provides participants with hands-on experience in the RCMP's training program. The RCMP is committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal officers to 10% to better represent the communities we serve across the country.

Both Bardy and Basawa will attend a three-week training program at Depot, from May 13th to June 2nd, 2018. The training focuses on teaching collaborative problem-solving skills, law enforcement, public speaking, cultural diversity, and facilitating Safe Community Workshops in communities. There are also elements of physical fitness and drill, which promote team work and provide participants with long-term strategies to meet personal fitness goals. The RCMP will provide transportation, meals, accommodation, a uniform, and three weeks of training wages.

The RCMP offers an exceptional career, letting you make a real difference in your community and your country. No other police force in Canada provides the levels of services and variety offered by the RCMP, as well as opportunities for continued learning and growth.

The RCMP is looking for people from across the country to join Canada's national police service. If you or someone you know is thinking about becoming a police officer with the RCMP, visit rcmpcareers.ca.
