Ducks Unlimited Canada dedicates Calhoun Marsh in Shepody, N.B to proud New Brunswicker Mac Dunfield
FREDERICTON, New Brunswick, May 03, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On Saturday, May 5, 2018, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is dedicating Calhoun Marsh in Shepody, N.B, to lifelong volunteer, former DUC board president, and proud New Brunswicker Mac Dunfield.
Dunfield is one of the "founding four" DUC members who worked to establish DUC's conservation mission in Atlantic Canada. He started volunteering in New Brunswick in 1968, and was elected to the board in 1995. He was also instrumental in establishing the Continuing Habitat Project Operations fund and the Atlantic Habitat Partnership Initiative, which have been critical in ensuring thousands of restored wetlands are taken care of into the future.
Marsh memories
The Bay of Fundy's unique Shepody coastal plain marshes, including Calhoun, provide important migration and nesting habitat for countless species of migratory birds. Dunfield's connection to this waterfowl hotspot goes back decades to when he was a boy exploring the area in pursuit of his favourite bird, the American black duck.
Mac was so enamoured with the beauty of the Shepody Marshes that he later convinced his late friend and artist, Lars Larsen and his wife Michelle, to set up their studio in the area. To this day, Mac can't drive through Shepody without pulling into Calhoun and admiring flocks of ducks descending into the wild rice stand, or listening to the calls of Canada geese, pied-billed grebes, frogs and sora rails that call the place home.
Dunfield's dedication will take place Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 3 p.m. at Calhoun Marsh. A reception and the Lars Larsen fundraising dinner will be held at Broadleaf Guest Ranch following the dedication event.
