Manulife and the YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo Work Together to Build a Healthier and Stronger Community

Generous donation from Manulife to provide thousands of children and youth with the tools and support to become active for life

WATERLOO, ON, April 18, 2018 /CNW/ - Thanks to a generous donation of $150,000 from Manulife to the YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo, thousands of children and youth will develop the basic motor skills, confidence and motivation they need to stay active throughout their lives. Mike Doughty, President and CEO of Manulife Canada, along with Peter Sweeney, CEO of the YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo, officially announced yesterday that the company will support the development of a physical literacy program at the YMCA.

"At Manulife we believe that a healthy, active lifestyle goes hand-in-hand with living a long and happy life," says Mike Doughty, President & CEO of Manulife Canada. "We're excited to partner with the YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo to develop a physical literacy program for youth, which will help young Canadians get a head start on adopting healthy habits for life."

"Empowering children and youth is foundational to our work as a YMCA. I am thrilled to have a partner like Manulife support our work, by enabling us to empower more children and youth in our community to live healthier and stronger lives," says Peter Sweeney, CEO of the YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo.

Youth in our communities are less active today than they have ever been; only 9% of children aged 5-17 are active for the recommended 60 minutes per day. Research shows that without the development of physical literacy, many children and youth withdraw from physical activity and sports and turn to more inactive choices during their leisure time. Many children fall behind in learning basic movement skills due to inadequate physical education and inequality in access to recreation. Physical literacy training addresses the need for a return to basics, and helps make learning movement fun and meaningful in a way that promotes feelings of success, self-esteem and accomplishment. These skills will motivate and empower youth to build positive connections to movement for life.

To celebrate this exciting partnership, Manulife and the YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo hosted a special gift announcement yesterday.  Manulife and YMCA leaders, staff and children came together to gain a better understanding of what physical literacy means through a series of challenges designed to build fundamental skills and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
