Government of Canada Helps Freight Operators Increase Fuel Efficiency and Save Money

OTTAWA, April 17, 2018 /CNW/ - With heavy-duty vehicles accounting for 37 percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector, our government is committed to helping all heavy-duty vehicle fleets across the country optimize their operations and take the necessary steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, today announced that Canadian fleet companies can apply to receive up to $10,000 to make informed decisions on reducing fuel costs and GHG emissions. The Green Freight Assessment Program will review a company's operations and determine opportunities for improvements in efficiency. The assessment will allow them to be more competitive while reducing fuel costs and harmful GHG emissions.

Successful program applicants may also be considered for additional funding up to $50,000 to help finance and implement changes outlined in their assessment.

Interested companies must complete the online application by June 15, 2018.

Industry consultations identified financial challenges and a lack of information as the main barriers to implementing emission-reducing strategies. The Green Freight Assessment Program will help eliminate these barriers and help Canadian companies make informed decisions specific to their operations by providing increased access to freight-efficiency tools and information to heavy-duty vehicle fleets across Canada.

As Canada transitions to a low-carbon future and work continues with provinces and territories to support a Canadian Energy Strategy, the Green Freight Assessment Program is an important component in our strategy to create jobs, advance Canada's clean future and help us realize our commitments under the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.

Quote

"Canada is committed to initiatives that reduce emissions and help industry contribute to our domestic and international climate goals. The Green Freight Assessment Program will equip fleet owners and operators with the tools and information necessary to make decisions that will have a positive impact on the environment while also reducing operating costs."
