The Centre is bringing on board Heather Gaskill, as part of its expansion of treatment options to better cover PTSD and trauma.

Heather has worked as a researcher, community educator, advocate, and hospital social worker, but shifted to a primary focus of psychotherapy in 2006. Having spent most of her career so far on Canada's East Coast, her background includes time with two sexual assault centres, program design and facilitation with a program dedicated to the treatment of women struggling with substance use, and most recently four years with community mental health, specializing in trauma. Heather also has experience in the design and facilitation of workshops on trauma therapy for other professionals.

The trauma program is available to all clients who are struggling with work-related stress and focuses on (1) how clients can self-regulate to deal with dissociation, anxiety, depression, anger, and other symptoms of trauma, and (2) how clients can pursue a fulfilling life, in spite of suffering. Although there is a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) component in the trauma program, therapies that focus on the trauma experience are kept to a minimum. Even though clients inevitably bring up their trauma experiences during the course of treatment, therapists do not focus on these experiences. It is, of course, therapeutically necessary to validate these experiences, but the emphasis is on how clients can begin to pursue a more fulfilling life while suffering from trauma symptoms.

It should be noted that the trauma program is a residential program at the Centre's facility in Powell River, BC, and is male only. However, it reaches men from throughout Western Canada, such as cities like Vancouver or Victoria in BC, or Edmonton or Alberta in Alberta. An outpatient trauma program for both males and females is expected to be available later this year.
