More spaces and improved facilites for Albertans fleeing family violence

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE, AB, March 26, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Alberta are investing approximately $1.9 million to increase capacity at Mountain Rose Women's Shelter. This funding is part of a $6.15 million commitment to women's facilities across Alberta, to provide maintenance, repairs and new construction of shelters and transitional housing to support women and children fleeing family violence.

This funding complements the Alberta government's annual investment of more than $50 million for women's shelters province wide.

The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Honourable Irfan Sabir, Minister of Community and Social Services, made the announcement today.

• This funding for Mountain Rose Women's shelter is a portion of the $6.15 million provided to Alberta by the federal government to support the construction and renovation of off-reserve shelters and transitional housing for families fleeing family violence, through the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement.
• The Alberta government provides more than $50 million annually to support women's shelters. This includes providing operational funding for 710 beds in 30 women's emergency shelters, as well as programming in 12 second-stage shelters and fee-for-service agreements with five First Nations on-reserve shelters.
• The Government of Canada recently unveiled its National Housing Strategy?a 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need.
