Statement by Minister Joly on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
On March 21, people in Canada and around the world mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
OTTAWA, March 21, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, people in Canada and around the world mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Racism divides communities, breeds fear and stokes animosity. As former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said, "An assault on one minority community is an attack on all."
In Canada, our diversity is a source of strength. While we have made important progress in the fight against discrimination in recent decades, more work still needs to be done. Last year, our government committed $5.5 million to help communities combat racism and discrimination. This funding supported more than 50 community-led initiatives across the country.
Through Budget 2018, we will be investing an additional 23 million dollars in funding to build stronger, more inclusive communities.
This year, as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, let us reaffirm our commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to standing up against racism, hate, xenophobia and bigotry in all their forms. I encourage all Canadians to work together toward a more positive, inclusive future for our communities, our country and our world.
