Learning the value of infrastructure asset management

New AM101 booklet explains the fundamentals of asset management to Canadian communities

CALGARY, March 21, 2018 /CNW/ - With an infrastructure deficit estimated at more than $120 billion, Canada needs every advantage it can access to narrow the gap.

That's why the Canadian Network of Asset Managers (CNAM), with funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM)'s partner organizations grants, have created their "New to AM" program, supporting every community's journey in their efforts to adopt best practices in managing their infrastructure and meeting their communities service requirements both today, and for the future.

"Asset management (AM) helps communities to do more with less, by supporting us to make more effective decisions regarding our assets and services today, and better position us for the future," said Melissa Osborne, CNAM Vice Chair and Senior Manager of Asset Planning for the City of Windsor, Ont. "AM provides a structured approach to tracking performance, costs and risk to meet out service objectives."

"Local governments generate exceptional public value from the resources available to them. Continuing to strengthen their asset management practices will mean even stronger outcomes, both for the residents they serve and for the country we're building together," said FCM president Jenny Gerbasi.

CNAM's program includes a series of free webinars targeted at introducing communities to asset management and the benefits therein, and will be complimented by the release of an Asset Management 101 booklet. The booklet provides a clear sequence for how municipalities should progress through the asset management journey, providing tools and resources from communities of all sizes, across Canada, along the way. The booklet is available in English and French and will be shipped to public sector organizations for free for a limited time.

The program will also include 1-day awareness workshops held in cities across Canada:
