BYU Law and Business Schools to Jointly Host Ethics and Compliance Conference

PROVO, Utah, March 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- BYU Law School and BYU Marriott Business School will co-host a conference on Organizational Ethics and Compliance to be held on March 23, 2018. The conference will feature discussions on principles of business ethics, effective compliance programs, investigation and resolution of serious ethics and compliance issues, and compliance culture.

A highlight of the conference will be the panel discussion by Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes; Chief Magistrate Judge Paul Warner; and Dan Wadley, Acting Interim Director of the SEC Regional Office in Salt Lake City. They will address the issue 'Wasatch Front: White Collar Crime and Affinity Fraud Capital?'

The conference, which is also co-sponsored by the BYU Wheatley Institution Ethics Initiative, will include local leaders and national experts brought together by conference organizers Craig Galli, BYU Law School professor of business ethics, compliance and environmental law, and Dr. Brad Agle, Marriott School professor of ethics and author of The Business Ethics Field Guide. Sherron Watkins, former vice president of Enron and whistleblower, will present a keynote address on "Lessons from Enron." Walmart's Executive Vice President and Global Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer Jay Jorgensen will instruct on the "Elements of an Effective Ethics and Compliance Program." Bill O'Rourke, former president of Alcoa-Russia, will present on "Creating a Culture of Ethics and Compliance ? Stories from the Russian Trenches and Beyond."  Gregory Goldberg, chair of the national white collar defense practice group at Holland & Hart LLP; Emily Hardman, attorney and communications consultant; and Julie Hunter, vice president of corporate compliance, Young Living Essential Oils, will discuss "Managing a Compliance Crisis" from their disciplines.

"The purpose of this conference is to promote the development of business leaders and a business culture that embrace the highest ethical principles," said BYU Law School Dean Gordon Smith. "We are delighted that such an impressive group of speakers will join us to model and analyze such principles. The pervasiveness of national scandals underscores the need for multinational corporations to adhere to minimum standards of legally compliant and ethical behavior. Closer to home, the Wasatch Front has over the years developed the reputation for being a white collar crime and affinity fraud capital. These issues will be examined during the conference."

Organizational behavior expert and author Professor Kim Cameron, University of Michigan, will speak on "Virtuous Leadership and Virtuous Organizations."  Other prominent business ethics professors include Professor Isaac Smith, Cornell University, and Professor Jared Harris, University of Virginia, who will offer insights from the increasingly important "behavior ethics" discipline.

The conference will conclude with a presentation from Suzie Draper, vice president of business ethics and compliance, Intermountain Health Care; Matthew Droz, counsel, ExxonMobil and legal and compliance manager, Mozambique Rovuma Venture; and Sonny Cave, executive vice president, general counsel, and chief compliance and ethics officer, ON Semiconductor Corporation, regarding "Careers in the Growing Ethics and Compliance Field."

The Organizational Ethics and Compliance Conference will be held on March 23 from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the BYU Law and Business schools. Registration is open to students as well as to experienced lawyers and business leaders leading up to the event. Practicing attorneys may receive up to seven Utah State Bar CLE credits by attending.
