People First Partners With People Centered Internet

SAN FRANCISCO, March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- People First and People Centered Internet (PCI) have partnered to work towards returning humanity to the center of the internet and to respond to the pressing problem of lost and stolen identity in the wake of catastrophes and crises.

Mei Lin Fung co-founded PCI with Vint Cerf, often considered one of the "Fathers of the Internet." Cerf remains active in multiple initiatives, including contributions to global policy development, growth and adoption of the Internet.

"We are excited and delighted to have John Philpin and the thought leaders of People First as one of our partners," Fung said. "We are already working together on Lost Identity Initiatives, with a specific focus on Puerto Rico and the fires in Northern California."

Lost Identity was launched at the last Internet Identity Workshop (IIW) and has been steadily building ever since. It is now one of several initiatives that sit within PCI's Impact Network.

"This collaborative group is essential to putting people first and has highlighted the partnership elements that People First are already bringing to PCI," Fung added.

Philpin shared significant points from Javelin's 2018 Identity Fraud Study released last month:

"Most notable is that as embedded chip cards and terminals are being adopted in physical stores," Philpin explained, "identity fraud is shifting to online access."

Neal O'Farrel, Executive Director of The Identity Theft Council and a member of The Lost Identity Group, expanded, "The Sonoma fires represent a troubling evolution of the problem, where identity theft is demonstrably intersecting with natural calamities. Reports of a spike in identity theft and FEMA fraud around the disaster reveal over 200,000 cases of identity fraud nationwide, with claims that Sonoma victims are possibly connected to the 2017 Equifax breach."
