"Love Wins" Concert Set to Promote Healing in the Wake of LGBTQ2S Community Murders
On March 29, the LGBTQ2S community and a powerhouse lineup of musical talent, including Carole Pope, Jackie Richardson, Molly Johnson, John Alcorn and members of Barenaked Ladies, will come together for a celebration of life at Nathan Phillips Square
TORONTO, March 8, 2018 /CNW/ - Co-chairs Salah Bachir and Kate Alexander Daniels hope you will join them at Nathan Phillips Square on March 29, 2018, for "Love Wins," a musical love letter to the LGBTQ2S community in the wake of the murders that have rocked Toronto's Church-Wellesley Village.
"As terrible as we are all feeling, Kate and I want this event to be more of a love letter to the community than a vigil," says Bachir. "We want it to be part of the healing process, but also a celebration of our strength, our compassion and our will."
As more information continues to emerge about the series of murders, we are a community in mourning. Friends, family and lovers have all been affected. We have been left feeling vulnerable and uncertain.
Toronto Mayor John Tory shares, "The tragic incidents have been unprecedented in our great city. We mourn those who we have lost and come together in healing, in strength. This concert is one of many events to come organized from a place of love and unity for Toronto."
The only member of the LGBTQ2S community on City Council, and representing the Church-Wellesley Village, Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam says, "We know the investigation will be ongoing and that the truth, inquiries and legal process will take years to unfold. It is exactly for these reasons I reached out to noted philanthropist and city leader Salah Bachir as well as to Kate Daniels, and others, to produce this historic gathering. It is our love letter comprised of song and music to bring the city and community together in love and resilience."
The concert, which will take place outside Toronto City Hall, will include performances by John Alcorn; Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn and Tyler Stewart of Barenaked Ladies, featuring Carole Pope; Kayla Diamond; Forte Toronto Gay Men's Chorus; Elijah Woods, Jamie Fine and Poesy from CTV's "The Launch"; Thelma Houston; Molly Johnson; Billy Newton-Davis; Jackie Richardson; Theo Tams; Simone Denny; and the Toronto All-Star Big Band.
The evening will also feature messages of support from Elton John and David Furnish, k.d. lang, Cyndi Lauper, Celine Dion and others.
Everyone is invited to Nathan Phillips Square from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 29 to share in the music and spend time with friends.
