Chester Community Charter School Announces Winners of Its First Annual Black History Oratorical Contest
CHESTER, Pa., March 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 150 Kindergarten and first-grade students at Chester Community Charter School (CCCS) recently celebrated Black History Month by participating in an Oratorical Contest held at the School's West Campus Gymnasium, 2730 Bethel Road, Chester, PA 19013.
Families, students and CCCS teachers and administrators were in attendance as the participating students recited speeches, memoirs, poems, and "spoken word," in classroom groups, to pay homage to the works of great African-American writers, authors, and orators (Video available at chestercommunitycharter.org).
First-, second-, and third-place prizes were awarded after two preliminary rounds. Top honors went to Ms.Tiffani Osborne's first-grade class, for their recitation of "Harriet Tubman," by Eloise Greenfield; second place was awarded to Ms. Jessica Albrittain's Life Skills class for their performance of "My People," by Langston Hughes; and the third-place winner was Amber McHugh's kindergarten class for "Life Doesn't Threaten Me," by Maya Angelou.
CCCS's judges for the competition included: Ms. Susanne Cianfaro, student services coordinator/social worker; Dr. David Clark, CEO; Dr. Benita Jessup, director, English Language; Dr. Linda Portlock, deputy superintendent; Ms. Annette Ray, executive assistant to Dr. Clark; Dr. Kwame Williams, principal, Freedom Hall, and Ms. Stephanie Wright, student services coordinator.
"The school's kindergarten and first-grade students worked very hard to produce a fitting tribute for Black History Month," said Principal Nicole Patterson. "I promise this event will become an annual tradition."

Chester Community Charter School opened its doors on September 9, 1998, serving 97 students from its modest, four, meeting rooms, in the lobby of the Howard Johnson Hotel, in Chester, PA.
