4M Carbon Fiber Corp. Gains New Japanese Patent Rights for Plasma Oxidation of Polymeric Materials

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- 4M Carbon Fiber Corp. (4M) announced today that a new patent for the Company's method of plasma oxidation for polymeric materials was issued by the Japan Patent Office on January 10, 2018. The patent covers 4M's use of the plasma oxidation process in that country. This further strengthens the protection and exclusivity 4M has on this technology around the world. 4M already has four issued patents in the United States and has multiple additional U.S. and worldwide patent applications still in process.

"The issuance of this patent came without any rejections from the Japan Patent Office, which is rare. We believe that this clearly shows the true uniqueness of the technology," Dr. Truman Bonds, the CTO of 4M, commented.  Bonds continued, "Gaining patent protection in the same country with the world's three largest carbon fiber producers, Toray, Teijin and Mitsubishi, gives us what we believe is a critical advantage in our quest to fundamentally change the carbon fiber industry."

Interest continues to grow from the carbon fiber industry as 4M prepares to deploy its proprietary plasma oxidation technology to meet the growing demand for carbon fiber. Compared to conventional oxidation, plasma oxidation is three times faster, uses less than one third the energy, leading to reduced manufacturing costs and increased throughput. These claims have been validated by multiple international carbon fiber producers and the Company is in discussions with several of the world's largest carbon fiber makers and automakers to participate as the launch partner for the production of low cost carbon fiber.
