VOORHEES, N.J., Feb. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Brand owners and leading retailers have challenged themselves and their supply chain partners to deliver more sustainable solutions. Typically, these sustainability initiatives are prioritized in order of impact by the 3 "Rs": Reduce (most impactful), Reuse, Recycle (least impactful). However, few consumers and B2B customers are willing to sacrifice functionality or cost for a more sustainable solution.
When it came time to expand capacity and recapitalize its injection stretch blow molding equipment, Comar, a leading specialty packaging and dispensing manufacturer, embraced the challenge and decided to break the status quo to deliver to the market a more sustainable product without sacrificing functionality or affordability.
Comar's IDworkstm team took advantage of the latest technological advancements to design optimized, light weighted PET bottles meeting all critical-to-function performance characteristics for filling, labeling, handling, warehousing, and shelf life. The enhanced design and processing capabilities adopted by Comar allow for significantly less resin content and energy consumption per bottle (reduce) with improved aesthetics via more consistent material distribution which increases color uniformity.
Scott Conklin, Comar's EVP of Sales & Marketing, said, "our legacy PET packers and most packers on the market today are actually suboptimal. Old tools were designed heavy to compensate for greater variation in material distribution based on the molding technology available at that time." Comar's optimized PET packer portfolio has been tested for top load strength, wall thickness variation, compliance to dimensions and industry-standard aesthetics, and moisture vapor and oxygen transmission rates (passing USP 671 tight container protocol). Conklin continued, "Our team has done a great job considering all aspects of the value chain from consumer preferences, where the focus was shelf life and feel, to contract packagers where the focus was their ability to fill and label. We found that with very modest modifications to equipment settings, leading contract packagers have substantiated their ability to efficiently process our lighter weight bottles."
"Our team is constantly looking to drive the industry forward. We are one of the few companies to offer product made of 100% FDA grade PCR (recycled) content in both PET and HDPE and we'll be launching an innovative one piece push-and-turn child-resistant closure to pair with these bottles later this year," Conklin said.
Comar encourages brand owners and retailers to continue to specify the optimized PET bottles to reduce the amount of resin used and energy consumed in the production and transportation of their product.
