PatientKeeper and HCA Awarded U.S. Patent for Technology that Underlies Physician Workflow Automation System

WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- PatientKeeper®, Inc., a leading provider of healthcare applications for physicians, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded the company and its corporate parent, HCA Healthcare, Inc., a patent for technology they invented that underlies PatientKeeper's physician workflow automation software.

The patent, entitled "Contextual Assessment of Current Conditions" (U.S. No. 9,779,611), describes the mechanism by which PatientKeeper aggregates disparate sources of patient data and presents the most relevant components for the patient's current condition to individual users based on their clinical specialty and personal preferences.  As implemented in PatientKeeper software, the result is an information system that enables physicians to make more informed and actionable care decisions directly at the point of care.

"This patent is an acknowledgement of the creativity and ingenuity of PatientKeeper's engineering team," Paul Brient, CEO of PatientKeeper, said. "We continue to tackle numerous challenges associated with putting massive amounts of healthcare data to work for physicians and patients. Providers need the right information presented to them in the right way, at the right time, and that is exactly what our patented technology is doing."

This patent is the first registered by PatientKeeper in collaboration with HCA, which acquired PatientKeeper in November 2014, and the third patent in PatientKeeper's 20-year history.

"HCA and PatientKeeper have worked closely to provide an exceptional physician experience based on innovative technology," said P. Martin Paslick, senior vice president and chief information officer at HCA. "This patent is proof of our dedication to continuous workflow improvement that saves physicians time and helps them deliver better patient care."
