Sechrist Veterinary Health Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Supports University Of Tennessee Snake Bite Study

ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sechrist Veterinary Health Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber located at The John and Ann Tickle Small Animal Hospital at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center, in Knoxville, TN is being used in a study that will measure the effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) on wound healing in canines suffering from snake bites.

The prospective, blinded and controlled study is being conducted to assess the effects of HBOT on local wound swelling, severity and pain. A secondary objective is to describe the safety and effectiveness of HBOT in dogs. All dogs will receive standard care for snake bites, including fluids and pain medication. Dogs will be chosen randomly to be in either the HBOT group or the control group (No HBOT).

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the therapeutic breathing of 100% oxygen while the body is under increased ambient pressure. It is used as an adjunctive treatment to improve blood and tissue oxygenation and enhance the body's natural antibacterial activity and reduce inflammation. The results of the study will determine if HBOT improves recovery after snake bites.
