The Mékinac MRC is improving railway access in the regional industrial park in Saint-Tite

The project to set up a transshipment centre will benefit businesses in the region

SAINT-TITE, QC, Feb. 19, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

Quebec's communities must have infrastructure that promotes the growth of businesses there so that these businesses can grow and create high-quality jobs for the middle class. This is why the Government of Canada agreed to provide $847,378 in support to the regional county municipality (MRC) of Mékinac (in French) for its project to develop a rail-road transshipment centre in the regional industrial park in Saint-Tite.

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Member of Parliament for Saint-Maurice?Champlain and Minister of International Trade, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED.

Many innovative small and medium-sized businesses in the region will benefit from this large-scale project, which will result in better access to national and foreign markets for their procurement and deliveries. Furthermore, this project will attract investments from businesses that want to establish themselves in the regional industrial park to take advantage of the facilities.

The Mékinac MRC contains 10 municipalities. In 1996, these municipalities decided to create a regional industrial park on land adjacent to the main regional Canadian National (CN) rail line. To operate a rail-road or road-rail transshipment centre there, development work will take place on 34,217 square metres of land.

The funds have been granted through a non-repayable contribution under CED's Quebec Economic Development Program. The support will allow the Mékinac MRC to carry out varied construction work, including moving and extending the railway, site development, paving and the installation of infrastructure for site security (fences, access barriers, streetlights).
