Statement by the Prime Minister on Chinese Lunar New Year

OTTAWA, Feb. 16, 2018 /CNW/ - The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival:

"This week, Chinese communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year.

"The Chinese Lunar New Year takes place on the first day of the first month in the Lunar calendar, and is a time to look forward to the year ahead with hope and optimism. Families and loved ones will come together to give thanks for the blessings of the past year, exchange gifts, and welcome the arrival of the Year of the Dog ? a symbol of honesty, hard work, and determination.

"In 2018, we also mark the Canada-China Year of Tourism ? a chance to celebrate the many contributions of the Chinese-Canadian community. Each day, Chinese Canadians make communities across our country stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous. As we move forward together in 2018, let's continue to celebrate everything that unites us, and the diversity that makes us strong.

"On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish all those celebrating success, peace, and happiness in the New Year.

"Gong Xi Fa Cai! Gong Hey Fat Choy! Gong Xi! Gong Xi!"
