Appointments to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, today announced the appointment and renewal of several diverse members of the governing council for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). They are:

- Martha Crago, Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation), McGill University
- Robin Craig, Senior Manager, Institute of Aboriginal Peoples' Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research
- Donald Desserud, Professor, University of Prince Edward Island
- Cinthia Duclos, Assistant Professor, Université Laval
- Karen R. Grant, Senior Scholar, University of Manitoba
- Åsa Kachan, CEO and Chief Librarian, Halifax Public Libraries
- Normand Labrie, Associate Dean, Programs, University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education
- Claudia Malacrida, Professor and Department Chair, University of Lethbridge

SSHRC is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports post-secondary?based research and research training in the humanities and social sciences. The agency plays an important role in Canada's research and scientific landscape and is committed to fostering greater equity, diversity and inclusion in the sciences. SSHRC invests over $350 million annually, supporting more than 8,000 graduate students and nearly 14,000 researchers.

- SSHRC's governing council promotes and assists research and scholarship in the social sciences and humanities. It meets regularly to set policy and program priorities and allocate budgets.
- In 2016, the Government of Canada adopted a new approach to Governor in Council appointments. This approach strives for gender parity and is supported by an open, transparent and merit-based selection process: one that will result in the recommendation of exceptionally competent candidates who truly reflect Canada's diversity.
- The terms of these appointments are staggered between two and three years' duration.
