CRICO Strategies and I-PASS Patient Safety Institute Announce Partnership Aimed at Improving Communication and Reducing Malpractice Risk

BOSTON, Feb. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- CRICO Strategies, a division of CRICO, and the I-PASS Patient Safety Institute, today jointly announce their partnership, resulting from the numerous synergies shared by the companies' missions. Through analytic and consultative capabilities of CRICO Strategies and the implementation of the I-PASS solution, hospitals have the data and expertise needed to enact and sustain improved communication initiatives.

The I-PASS Patient Safety Institute (www.ipassinstitute.com) was founded with a mission to improve patient safety by expanding the use of the I-PASS handoff method?the result of a decade-long collaboration of researchers, hospitalists, and medical education specialists. To facilitate broad scale adoption of I-PASS, the I-PASS Institute developed customized, web-based solutions to enable more rapid adoption of the I-PASS methodology in various medical specialties.

CRICO Strategies combines powerful analytic tools with consultative assessment and services to identify key factors involved in patient harm by analyzing medical malpractice data. Its Comparative Benchmarking System (CBS) database currently contains more than 400,000 claims representing approximately 30% of all US medical malpractice claims. A recent CBS analysis showed that communication was a factor in 30% of all cases, of which 57% involved provider-provider communication failures. I-PASS provides a state of the art, actionable learning and sustainment tool to bridge communication gaps between providers.

"It's clear from our claims data that communication breakdowns drive medical error and patient harm," says Dana Siegal, RN, CPHRM, CPPS, Director of Patient Safety and interim AVP at CRICO Strategies. "When information gets lost between the individuals who have it and those who need it, a cascade of events can result, many leading to serious patient harm and even death," continued Siegal.

In a large, multi-center study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, implementation of the I-PASS handoff methodology was associated with a 30% reduction in medical errors. The I-PASS Patient Safety Institute, Inc., provides a comprehensive set of cloud-based tools to support the implementation and sustainment of I-PASS?considered the 'gold standard of communication for effective signout1 during transitions of medical care.

"This partnership speaks to the shared missions of each company working to improve patient safety," says Christopher P. Landrigan, MD, MPH, Co-founder and Board Member, I-PASS Patient Safety Institute. "CRICO supported the initial work of the I-PASS Study Group, which has evolved into a product and service to improve handoffs and patient safety, with the added benefit of driving down costs that are associated with medical errors," continued Landrigan.
