Harmonization of Canada's Laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: the AFNQL Applauds the Adoption of Bill C-262
WENDAKE, QC, Feb. 8, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador applauds the adoption in second reading of Bill C-262, an Act to Harmonize Canada's Laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
"The Bill took another important step in its implementation. I want to congratulate Mr. Roméo Saganash for his courage, resilience and hard work to require that Canada provides itself with a proper legislative framework adapted to the principles of the Declaration. True reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples obviously involves the unconditional implementation of the Declaration, so that laws and policies are finally in compliance with the fundamental rights of our populations and communities. It's a matter of equity and justice in a country that prides itself on being a leader in human rights", stated Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL.
On the other hand, the AFNQL wants to remind the Couillard Government of its inescapable responsibility to give effect to the provisions of the Declaration with respect to the provincial laws that affect First Nations.
